Joseph 'Joey' Democko - Hero Amongst us

One of my favourites, Rachel Ray Show previewed a hero among us, Joseph Democko. It moved me. The story of a single dad at 20 years old, adopting his sister's 3 kids. After i watched that amazing story on Rachel Ray, now i found the news article on People magazine and share it with you. Hope it moves you too!

"I don't want to force them to call me Dad. Whatever they want to call me, they can call me—as long as it's nothing bad. In the beginning, Chris would say, 'You are not my father.' This weekend, he kept saying, 'Dad, Dad, Dad.' It just rolled off his tongue, which was kind of cool. Then George said, 'No, it's Joey.'"

On a recent Wednesday evening, Joseph Democko had already clocked a full day as a medical billing clerk. Then his real work began. In the kitchen of his Anaheim, Calif., apartment, he tossed chicken breasts onto a skillet, dumped a packet of freeze-dried potatoes into boiling water and kept a watchful eye on his three boys – Chris, 6, Anthony, 5, and George, 3 – who scooted crazily in and out of the ground-floor flat on Razors. Clearing the table of Spider-Man toys, he set out three plates and juice boxes and called out, "Dinner's ready!"

"Taking care of Christopher is gigantic. He used to go a couple of times a week for physical therapy; now he goes every three months for an evaluation. And every six months he goes to a spina bifida clinic; I take the day off, unpaid. Then there are other doctor appointments, ultrasounds for the bladder. I try not to dwell on it. I can't change it. I love Chris the way he is."

The scene looks like an ordinary supper with Dad, except that Democko, 23, is actually the boys' Uncle Joey. Just a few years earlier, social services removed Chris, Anthony and George from the home of Democko's twin sister, Jody, who spent time in jail for drug possession and forgery. Visiting his nephews at their foster home, the soft-spoken Democko was torn up every time he said goodbye. "They would scream and cry. I would cry," he recalls. "I had to get them back or I couldn't live with myself. They're my blood."

"On the weekends I take the kids to the park or to a $2 movie. I have dated, but right now it's too much. I'll meet friends for a drink or two every three months or so. But I've never been one to go out. I get more enjoyment doing something for the boys. Seeing them happy makes me happy."
That choice would transform Democko from a carefree 20-year-old who hit the gym twice a week to a multitasking single dad. But first he had to convince social services he was up to the task. "They said men couldn't take care of themselves let alone a child," he says. And there was an extra challenge: Chris, born with spina bifida – an incomplete closure of the spine – needs to be catheterized every four hours. Even Democko's mother, Susan, asked, "Are you sure you want to do this? This is for the rest of your life."

He was sure – and proved it by attending a parenting class, taking Chris to physical therapy, even getting a night-janitor job at Disneyland so his days were free for the boys. On May 3, 2004, Democko brought home 3-month-old George, becoming the youngest foster parent in Orange County. Helped by his mom (who died in 2005) and roommates, he recalls the time as a blur of diaper changes and late-night feedings. "I was a zombie," he says. Several months later, Democko also brought home Chris and Anthony, adopting them last fall. "Twenty is very young to take on something like this, and what's so unusual is that there are three children," says Linda Reuter, adoption program manager for the Orange County Social Services Agency. Julie Akau, a social worker there, adds, "He's always been very committed to the boys – and they adore him."

"The moments that make it worthwhile? When I go home. When I pick them up from daycare and see how happy they are to see me. When they come out screaming, 'Joeeey!!' As hard as you work, when you finally see that, it makes everything worth it."
That devotion is something Jody Democko – the boys' mother – appreciates even as it sometimes pains her to watch her brother bring up her sons. "It hurts," says Jody, 23, who now lives nearby and visits several times a week. "But the boys are better off. It's more stable. He's always been the more responsible one." (The boys have little contact with their birth father.) Democko, who periodically asks his sister to take a home drug test when she comes over, has mixed feelings about her role in the boys' lives. "They sometimes call her Mom," he says. "But I can't count on my sister for anything, so the way I look at it, it's just me and kids."

Relying on himself is nothing new. He was just 6 when his father walked out, leaving the family to fend for themselves, living for years in a cramped motel room. Though his grandfather supported them, Democko helped out with chores and a part-time job. "That experience made me realize what kind of person I wanted to be," Democko says now. He and Jody, once close, drifted apart after she ran away at 15 and eloped in Las Vegas – but that didn't stop Democko from falling in love with his nephews from the moment they were born. "The bond was instant," he says.

Now, Democko is doing his best to be the kind of father he never had. Between his $14-an-hour job and his $2,000 monthly stipend from social services, many weeks it's a stretch to make ends meet. He's also put some dreams of his own on hold. In a few years, when Chris is old enough to catheterize himself, Democko hopes to start night classes, maybe learn about the film industry. "I didn't get to go to college, but I want to," he says. "My time will come." For now, he's too busy to think much beyond the boys' immediate needs. "The only time to myself is from 9 p.m. to midnight," he says. "I'll check e-mail or watch a movie. When I need to scream, I walk out the front door and hold it shut." Still, Democko has no regrets. "I enjoy being a dad so much," he says. "I don't want to miss a second of it."

Man Goes to Court After Butt Stapled Shut

Patient claims he couldn't defecate for 17 days.
A West Virginia man is suing a Frederick County, Md., doctor for allegedly stapling his rectum shut during an operation, preventing the patient from defecating for 17 days, The Baltimore Examiner reported.
The mistake allegedly took place when Ronald Watkins, 64, had surgery for a rectal tumor, according to his lawsuit.
Dr. Manuel Casiano's lawyer said Watkins' bowels merely became "swollen shut," The Baltimore Examiner reported.
Since the surgery, Watkins experiences "rectal discharge" and must wipe 12 to 15 times a day, and he has had other procedures that otherwise would have been unnecessary, according to his attorneys.
The defense said Watkins' smoking two packs a day contributed to his bowel problems, The Baltimore Examiner reported.

Hospital tells grandfather, 71, that he's pregnant

PORTLAND, Ore. - A patient treated for agonizing abdominal pain received this surprising news in the hospital's paperwork: "Based on your visit today, we know you are pregnant."

Surprising indeed for 71-year-old John Grady Pippen.

The staff at Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach gave the retired mechanic and logger the ridiculously happy news this month, along with some pain pills.

Hospital administrator William McMillan says an errant keystroke caused the hospital's computer to spit out the wrong discharge instructions for the grandfather.

Stolen Masterpiece Found After 33 Years

33 years ago, a painting of a nude woman by French master Pierre Auguste-Renoir was stolen from the art collection of a family in Milan, Italy.

On Friday, that family was reunited with the painting, valued at $730,000.

Italian police were able to reclaim the painting by acting on a tip-off from a prominent art critic, Vittorio Sgarbi, who had been contacted by an art gallery owner for a valuation of the master's work.

Police arrested the gallery owner and two other suspects.

Shady McShade!!!

Interesting note: the owner's daughter vouched for the authenticity of the painting through the mark of a ball she hit it with in the early 1970s.

See! Kids running amok in the house isn't a bad thing all the time!

FAbulous Daniel Radcliffe

Has Harry Potter star, Daniel Radcliffe, stopped visiting the gym????

The hottie, with his usually tight abs and muscular frame, is looking a bit less than fabulous lately.

Were his abs fake during the first couple of shows performing in Equus?

Did they just paint them on?

Luckily he's not a chick, or they'd accuse him of being pregnant already.

Dan Radcliffe showed off his new, less than rock hard abs at the Broadway premiere of Equus on Thursday night.

Daniel Radcliffe Thrilleds The Crowd

Fans were lining up to see Daniel Radcliffe make his Broadway debut last night in “Equus” at the Broadhurst Theater in New York. Not only has Daniel, 19, been brushing up on his acting skills, but also he’s clearly been spending more time getting his body in shape for the part.

“There’s a lot of sweat on me by the end of the show and I’m a physically repellent thing. At least it’s good exercise. I don’t have to go to the gym,” he told USA Today.

In the show, Daniel plays the role of Alan Strang, a troubled teenager who falls in love with horses while undergoing equine therapy.

Scholarship In Memory Of Heath Ledger

There’s a new scholarship that’s been put in place for emerging Australian actors which will honor the memory of Heath Ledger. The Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship will award recipients up to $10,000, and round-trip airfare from Australia, to pursue a career in the United States.

Ledger was an Ambassador for AIF before his death in January. Current ambassadors include Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and Naomi Watts.

A friend of Heath’s Gregor Jordan is a part of the scholarship’s five-member judging panel, and says, “Broke Aussie actors in LA form a tradition that goes all the way back to Errol Flynn. Heath was definitely part of that tradition and this scholarship is something he would have been proud to have his name associated with.”

Heath’s father Kim echoes his statement, saying, “We as a family are pleased with the establishment and progress of the AIF scholarship award named in honor of our much loved and generous son, Heath. As a result of this scholarship, a talented Australian actor will gain valuable assistance to support their personal goals, and an opportunity for recognition in the very tough US film industry.”

Plans for the scholarship were first announced in June at AIF’s 2008 Breakthrough Awards. The selected actor must be over 18 and be in the early stages of his or her career. Applications are available online and will be accepted from Oct. 1 to Nov. 28, with the first beneficiary to be announced by mid-February.

Only one catch. You gotta be an Aussie.

"Man Sues Doctors After Penis Amputated"

And he claims they did it without consent - Ouch!
A Kentucky man and his wife said two doctors amputated the man's penis without his consent, and have filed a lawsuit.
According to the lawsuit, Philip Seaton, 61, went to have a circumcision last Octoberas part of treatment for a medical condition. Seaton said when he woke up from the procedure, he realized his penis had been amputated.
Seaton has suffered mental anguish, pain, and has lost the enjoyment of life, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit was filed in Shelby County court last week against Dr. John Patterson, who performed the procedure, Dr. Oliver James, who administered anesthesia, and Commonwealth Urology, PSC.
The lawsuit states that Patterson received consent to perform a circumcision and only a circumcision, and that Seaton did not consent to his penis being removed.
Kevin George, the plaintiff's attorney, said Patterson amputated the organ after finding cancer, but he only had consent to remove the foreskin.
"Sometimes you have an emergency and you have to do this, but he could very easily closed him up and said, 'Here are your options. You have cancer,' and the family would have said, 'We want a second opinion. This is a big deal,'" George said.
The lawsuit also claims the plaintiff did not consent to general anesthesia.
WLKY attempted to contact the doctors, but have not been able to reach them.

The Seatons are seeking punitive damages against both doctors and the medical practice. Attorneys for the defendants will now have a chance to respond to the suit.

Gossip Girl's Odd Couple. Isn't it Filthy?

Those rumors are true - Ed Westwick and Chace Crawford are a very odd couple.
Gay or not. But the co-starring Gossip Girl roomies definitely have an Odd Couple vibe going.
Chace Crawford is more than filthy - his slobbosity is off the charts, according to a spy.

“His apartment was a disgusting pigsty. There was crusty toothpaste and self-tanner all over the bathroom,” the late-night guest revealed to the NY Daily News.

“In the rest of the apartment, beer bottles and boxers just laying around.”

But there was an oasis of cleanliness in this vast desert of disarray - roomie Ed Westwick’s space.

Ed’s room was pristine,” the spy divulged. “Everything in it was perfectly in order.”

Justin's Wild Night With Leonardo DiCaprio

While Jessica Biel was moving boxes of her stuff into boyfriend Justin Timberlake’s Hollywood home, he was across the country partying with now single Leonardo DiCaprio and four hot women.

Justin, Leo and the ladies had a fun night dancing and playing beer pong at the singer’s New York City restaurant, Southern Hospitality.

Justin definitely didn’t have Jessica on his mind that night,” says an insider.

From 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., Justin flirted, laughed, and ignored the many calls he received on his cell phone.

“He looked like he was having too good a time to be bothered.”

Leo, meanwhile, is definitely enjoying his single life.

Leo is 33. Justin is 27.

Ode to Chace???

Looks like his guard was down!

Was Gossip Girl bad boy Ed Westwick drunk (or high) when he decided to recite poetry to entertainment news reporters?

Ed was at a Coke-sponsored party in the NYC this past week when he went on to share a poem from memory that he wrote “at like six in the morning.”

Here's the poem…word for word:
"Tell me what can you want?
You’ve got it all.
Things are real in a handshake.
Rest my bones these days in a different way.
Cherish the change; it may not stay.
I remember your dress,
Like dreams when you wake with a sudden start.
You’re beside me in the dark,
Wrapped in my arms.
Love is being entranced in a glance,
To muster up courage when you’re flustered,
To stumble on the words you prepare.
Don’t worry about the money that went down the drain
Because the best things in life are free."
In regards to his poetry, Ed said, “Right now I feel like nothing I’ve been writing has a definitive point of aim. I feel like you just need to keep writing until the writing itself just begins to take shape.”

Artsy fartsy mumbo jumbo.

But, isn't that a cheesy, cute poem about Chace?

Quote Of The Day

"You know what? Ed and I laugh about it. It's kind of funny. But it's like, you know, I guess some people assume there's a seed of truth to it. People think where there's smoke, there's fire. People think that, but they don't realise that, er, it's obviously, er, it's just so amazing the way something can be… just a complete fabrication, yet it gets twisted…It'll just go away in the end. I have actually met Perez Hilton a couple of times. He's normally very nice. But if he covers an untrue rumour, then I have to accept that it will become one of those things people will speculate about."

Lovers???

Something fishy is going on!

We've been contacted by entertainment reporters - within days of each other - from the NY Post and the NY Daily News.

They both wanted to share a juicy piece of info - too juicy to print, they said.

Seems like on-set sources, which the pubs tell us are reliable, have told each paper that Chace Crawford and Gossip Girl co-star and real-life roommate Ed Westwick are in a relationship and not trying to hide it, at least on set.

BOTH NY papers tell us that Chace and Ed were recently seen kissing, open-mouthed on set (in Chace's trailer).

Very interesting!

The Post and Daily News both declined to publish this item because they don't like to "out" people.

Uh huh. We find that quite hypocritical, as both papers have had no problem talking about Lindsay Lohan's relationship with saMAN Ronson.

So….

Are Chace and Ed dating????

Well, it's either true or someone(s) is/are trying to spread rumors to both New York papers about the Gossip Girl co-stars.

We hope it's true - they'd be a hot couple!

Chace & Ed Caught Making Up???

It’s the rumor that never dies: Chase Crawford and Ed Westwick being a young, hot couple. Are they one? You decide... The Gossip Girl hotties were reported making out in a LA night club this weekend.

A witness said the two hunky actors were all over each other at a LA club Saturday, but the source couldn’t confirm if they were just having a good time hanging out together, or if it was something more going on between them.

Recently Ed Westwick commented on the romance rumors with Chace Crawford: “It’s very comical. We’re two lads who are very close friends, but we’re straight as they come.”

Meanwhile, Chace is rumoured or officially (you choose from those 2 crosses) to be dating Charlie’s Angels star, Drew Barrymore.

'Cheater' Blaine Finishes 'Deadly' Stunt To Boos!

(Photo edited and taken from perezhilton.com)

Peeps don't like getting played!

We previously mentioned that many folks felt like David Blaine 'cheated' his way through his 3 day, 60-hour hanging stunt over New York's Central Park because he took multiple right side up breaks during the endeavor. At least one an hour. Sometimes more!

New Yorkers are a vocal bunch and they let Blaine know how craptasticlly they viewed this latest attention seeking gig.

The 'magician' was booed by onlookers at the big, ceremonial 'conclusion' event of his 'death defying' hanging stunt in New York City on Wednesday night.

Does this mean we won't hear from Blaine for a long time!

Don't come back unless you have something really, really good, Davie!
